Illumaphonium – Michael Davis

Designer and Inventor: Michael Davis
Installation Assistant: Lauren Connolly

The Illumaphonium is a dynamic and interactive, multi sensory, music making installation.

Created by musician and inventor Michael Davis, the semi acoustic, semi automatic, multi-player musical sculpture stands over three and a half meters tall and consists of more than a hundred illuminated chime bars each of which respond to touch, with ever changing patterns of light and sound, spreading out like waves over the giant instruments surface.

As the installation assistant, I created 300 resin casts of the ‘orb’ pieces from silicon moulds.  These resin orbs were attached onto aluminium scaffold bars and use of band saw, pillar drill and sand belts allowed alterations of the orbs.  I wired up LED light strips into the structure around the orbs, waterproofing them with silicon, constructing and spray painting the metal scaffold frames, seeing the installation through to final completion.
This installation was showcased at Light Night in Nottingham and has since gone on to tour around the UK.
